Explore Literary Edinburgh and the Writer In You

June 22-27, 2018

Travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, this June to coax your own stories, your own memories, onto the page. This workshop will involve class sessions, independent writing time, workshops with  Scottish writers, literary excursions  and opportunities to immerse yourself in local culture.

You can explore this medieval city, steeped in history and wander down the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, inspiring your own memories in the form of poetry or nonfiction prose. The workshop includes daily classes, literary excursions in historic Edinburgh, readings from local storytellers and a day trip to Abbotsford on the banks of the River Tweed, the village and Manor where Sir. Walter Scott lived.

While the workshop is focused on memoir writing ,we are open to people who weave in memories through other genres.

We will be based in the historic Salisbury Green Hotel on the University of Edinburgh campus bordering wilderness trails which wind through Holyrood Park.

Activity Level

Light to moderate.  Edinburgh is a walking city with hilly, clobblestone streets in the Old Town.  Buses and taxis are readily available near the Salisbury Green Hotel for transport to most sites. Our scheduled literary walk (optional) in Old Town will involve about 90 minutes of walking. Nearby  Holyrood Park, site of Arthur’s seat, offers many jogging and hiking opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
